Heinz Field
HOK Sport + Venue + Event,
Hunt Construction/Mascaro Construction
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
In 2002 BNI won the American Consulting Engineers Council, Engineering
Excellence, Grand Award for their structural design of Heinz Field
which features exposed steel designed to be architecturally proportioned
and structurally functional. Structural steel was natural for the
NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers. The 64,450 seat stadium was completed
in September 2001, and is also home for the University of Pittsburgh
Panthers football team. The upper seating deck, protected by a seventy-five
foot cantilevered canopy, is supported on tapered diagonal steel
pipes bearing on "quad pods" at the upper concourse level
forming an integral part of the building's character. The upper
seating deck cantilevers forty-five feet over the 129 luxury suites
that seat 1,500. The club lounges are located below the suites and
serve 6,600 club seats. |
Hexagonal cantilevered ramps structures
with fabric roof, at both sides of the south end zone, provide spectacular
column free views of both the action on the field and of the city.
The stadium is supported on an auger cast-in-place pile foundation.
